I started my career at First Investors Corp after graduating from the University of Illinois. I was given the opportunity to obtain my securities license before I graduated in May 2002. What attracted me to the Company was the opportunity to help people improve their lives, as well as the unlimited earnings potential. I knew that I didn't want a typical nine-to-five job, so the flexible schedule was very appealing.
I was young, ambitious and willing to learn. I was ready to work as hard as I needed to in order to be successful. I started my career in the Vernon Hills office, which was a brand new office at the time. This gave me the opportunity to have my manager, John Veirup, serve as my mentor. He taught me how to make it in this business. I learned not to be afraid of the phone, to stick to procedure and to always work hard.
One concern I had coming out of college was, who would invest with a 22-year old with no real experience? That's where the First Investors mentoring program worked so well for me. As my mentor, John accompanied me on appointments and helped build my confidence. He taught me that if you impress people with your knowledge and professionalism, they would look past your age. Therefore, I set out to learn anything and everything about the business. That's still my guiding principle today.
Another important factor in building my business is striving to provide the best possible service to my clients. Whether it's calling clients on their birthday, promptly returning a telephone call or sending my condolences, these actions go a long way toward building client relationships. I've found that building strong relationships with clients leads to repeat business and referrals.
Overall, First Investors has provided me with an exceptional opportunity and given me the support I need to build my career. I look forward to a long and prosperous future with First Investors.
